This year, ¡Globalquerque! New Mexico’s Annual Celebration of World Music & Culture, the Southwest’s biggest world music and culture party, enters its 14th year of bringing some of the finest acts from around the planet to New Mexico! Once again the festival will descend on the beautiful National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) along the banks of the Rio Grande in Albuquerque, NM. As always, ¡Globalquerque! will successfully mix the most eclectic lineup of world-class acts from across the planet – from the traditional to the cutting-edge – the legendary to up-and-coming new discoveries! Ticket and hotel info at Globalquerque.org.
With music that moves the body, ignites the mind and fills the soul, ¡Globalquerque! brings the world to Albuquerque and the Southwest on September 21 + 22, 2018, with performances on three stages – the sublime Fountain Courtyard, the expansive Plaza Mayor, and the state-of-the-art Journal Theatre. Already confirmed are acts from such diverse regions as Cuba, Democratic Republic of Congo, Italy an Egypt, bringing with them eclectic sounds that mix the contemporary (hip-hop, rock, new acoustic), with the traditional.
In addition to the evening performances, each year ¡Globalquerque! presents the popular Free Daytime Global Fiesta on Saturday. Among the fun and educational activities, are family-focused workshops with visiting performers, talks and presentations, international dance lessons, film, the ¡GlobalCOOKIE! decorating contest, Planet Music (a musical instrument “petting zoo” – please touch and play!), instrument building for kids of all ages and other hands-on, cultural activities. Musical and cultural surprises are around every corner including year two of the all-day Refugee Well-being Project, offering festival goers the opportunity to share drinks, sweets and learn greetings in many languages while observing henna demonstrations from members of New Mexico’s refugee community. The ever-popular Global Village of Craft, Culture & Cuisine, replete with booths featuring artwork, artisan crafts, and gourmet international cuisine, is open throughout the festival. It all makes ¡Globalquerque! a veritable trip around the world that draws the festival-goer in while keeping them engaged and entertained, an experience perhaps needed more than ever in our fragmented times.
¡Globalquerque! also continues its partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center to present the month-long 5th Annual International Cinema Series featuring six award-winning films from around the globe spanning all genres including documentary, comedy, drama, and music. Three films will be presented for free Each Thursday in September beginning September 6, in the Bank of America Theatre and Wells Fargo Auditorium at the NHCC, with two films screening during the festival’s Free Daytime Global Fiesta on Saturday, September 22 and the final film screening on September 27.
