4 Remote Camping Destinations for New Mexico Nature Lovers
Last week, we shared the four of the best places for your New Mexico camping trip. Today, we’re going to share four of the more remote camping destinations for New Mexico nature lovers. These are not your average camping destinations with lots of extra amenities and creature comforts. Rather, they are out of the way places where you can really get away from it all and reconnect with nature. They have beautiful views and secluded sites where you can have some privacy and contact with the wild and majestic environment of New Mexico’s incredible landscape.

1 Oasis State Park Camping for New Mexico Nature Lovers
Oasis State Park is a perfectly serene and out of the way camping site for New Mexico nature lovers, even though it is located in a state park. Oasis State Park Campground is not as rustic as some of the other entries on this list. It does have showers, water, and grills for campers to use. It also has more room than some of the others on this list, with more than 30 camp sites. Ten of those are for campers in tents, and there are over 20 sites that can accommodate larger RVs. You’ll find Oasis State Park in Portales, New Mexico, in Roosevelt County. It is a small lake that is great for swimming and fishing, and there are multiple sand dunes to explore.
2 Echo Amphitheater Camping for New Mexico Nature Lovers

The Echo Amphitheater Campground is one of New Mexico’s hidden gems that many are not even aware of. It is very secluded, and never crowded because there are only ten campsites. It is a true return to nature, without showers or other modern amenities. There are restrooms on the site, however. The best thing about this campground site is the gorgeous view of the naturally formed rocky amphitheater. It also has an amazing hiking trail, but remember to be safe when hiking in New Mexico. You’ll find the Echo Amphitheater Campground off of US 84 near Abiquiu, NewMexico.
3 James Canyon Camping for New Mexico Nature Lovers
James Canyon is a very small Sacramento Mountain area campground that is located in the Lincoln National Forest west of Mayhill, New Mexico, and off of US 82. It is easily as remote and private as Echo Amphitheater Campground because it only has six camp sites. There is not any room for very large RVs, but small ones that are under 16 feet in length are welcome. The campground has a vault restroom area, but few other amenities.
4 Cosmic Dark Sky Camping for New Mexico Nature Lovers

If you adore the sunsets and night skies of New Mexico (and who doesn’t?), you are going to want to experience the brilliant view of the Cosmic Campground in the Gila Natural Forest in Glenwood, New Mexico. It is the only United States campground that is also an International Dark Sky Sanctuary. This is because there is no light pollution or obstructions to interrupt your view of the stars in all directions. There is no water available on site, and no trash pickup, so you’ll need to do your part to keep New Mexico clean. They have installed a new toilet, and there is cell phone and internet service. You can also park and view the stars through a telescope. Whether you’re in a tent, an RV, or sleeping under the stars, this is a unique experience you’ll never forget.
