New Mexico Museum of Space History
The history behind many things in New Mexico often goes underappreciated. In Alamogordo, New Mexico we truly have many historic and completely unique lands and attractions.
The New Mexico Museum of Space History and International Space Hall of Fame houses some of the most historic achievements in the United States space history.
The Space Museum itself is an architectural wonder that reflects the New Mexican sun almost the entire day, the museum is visible from just about anywhere in Alamogordo and is utterly beautiful. The building was an idea the former 1973 Alamogordo mayor Dwight Ohlinger, thought of after being inspired by the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. The museum was completed in the October of 1976 and opened to the public the following November.
The grounds of the museum accommodates the John P. Stapp Air & Space Park. The outdoor exhibit features many historic NASA rockets,U.S. military rockets, and the Sonic Wind I rocket with test track. The rocket sled, which was ridden by Dr. John Stapp, set a world record for the fastest man on earth and land speed record with a whopping 632 miles per hour! Stapp will be forever remembered for his many contributions to the space and automobile industry for his groundbreaking safety studies and discoveries. He basically invented the integration of the seat belt in automobiles and saved countless amounts of lives. The dude is a hero that lived in our very own Alamogordo New Mexico! Much respect.
The museum offers a much deeper look into the U.S. Space exploration and the history behind it. New Mexico was vital in military and space advancements throughout the history of our country and the museum has levels showcasing the Tularosa Basin, Space Science and History, Space Astronauts, and they even have freeze dried ice cream! You know you want it!
If you’re looking for something that is completely unique to do, look no further than Alamogordo and the wonderful, historic Space Hall of Fame! You will be amazed and glad you went!
