Something Sweet in the Heart of Mesilla
The history of the building in which the Double Eagle currently resides spans back over one hundred years. But in 1984, is when the current restaurant really got it’s beginning. The renovations allowed for owner, C.W. Ritter, to create a unique restaurant in the historical Mesilla Plaza. Double Eagle is best known for the “World Famous” Bloody Mary’s (made with green chile infused vodka) and New Mexico’s one and only, Beef Aging Room. This allows for some pretty tasty steaks! A local New Mexico company, Bakka Ranch, is the primary supplier of their beef products which includes Sirloin, Rib-eye, NY Strip, and Brisket.
However, there is another reason to mosey on over to Double Eagle; the spectacular dessert selection. Bianca Lugo, Sous Chef and Pastry Chef, has been creating scrumptious treats at Double Eagle for over 2 years. There is even a chocolate cake, named after its creator, “Bianca’s flourless chocolate cake”. Her flourless cake can even be enjoyed by those with wheat sensitivities, because it is gluten free. This chocolate cake will satisfy even the biggest chocoholic!
Her culinary career began in 2006 when she worked at Vinton Cafe. Since then she has found herself working in various kitchens between Las Cruces and El Paso, and gaining some invaluable experience. Somehow she finds time to be a full-time student at DACC, in the Culinary Arts program, and she is also the student body president!
Lugo works alongside Executive Chef Luke Roberts, and he feels that “Lugos’ dessert contributions have elevated the dining experience for the guests” and he looks forward to the direction the restuarant is moving. Lugo finds her inspiration for her desserts from daily life, holidays and seasonal cuisine. There are always some delicious changes to the menu on a weekly basis, but you can find their staple menu items like Banana Enchilada, Chocolate Cake and Flan. But rest assured, you will always find something to satisfy your sweet tooth.
