Happy Birthday New Mexico!
We here at NewMexi.co love our state (duh!) and today, January 6th marks it’s 105th birthday! Our state is responsible for a lot of cool things and in celebration we are throwing some fun state facts at ya! Happy Birthday New Mexico!
1.White Sands National Monument is actually white gypsum crystals, not sand!

2. The “Green Chile capital of the WORLD” is our very own Hatch, NM.

3. Our state song was written by Elizabeth Garrett. She was the daughter of Pat Garrett, the man who killed Billy the Kid.

4. New Mexicans are outnumbered by livestock.

5.Our official state flag was chosen from a flag competition in 1920. This is what the original one looked like. Ew.

6. Tia Sophia’s in Santa Fe has claimed to be the first restaurant to invent the breakfast burrito.

7. Did you know we have a state Dinosaur? I didn’t either. It’s the Coelophysis!

8. The world’s first Atomic Bomb was detonated on July 16, 1945 on the White Sands Testing Range near Alamogordo.

9. The Palace of Governors in Santa Fe, built in 1610, is one of the oldest public buildings in America.

10. Some descendants of Spanish Conquistadors still speak a form of the 16th century language. Most of them reside in villages such as Chimayo‘, Truchas and Coyote. Nobody else in the world speaks this language!

I love everything about New Mexico but for me the sunsets are so spectacular that they take your breath away. You can see them anywhere in NM. I am so lucky that I was born in this state.

El Paso, Texas was the capital of New Mexico for a brief period, long before statehood.

San Gabriel, the original Spanish colony in present day Espanola, is the “cradle of western civilization” in North America. With the exception of a thirteen year period, (1680-1693), it has been continuously occupied. The Onate expedition was not made up of only Spanish settlers but of French, Greek, Italian, Flemish, Scottish and other Europeans.
